Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a.k.a. EMDR, is a therapeutic method where the patient focuses on a traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation like eye movements or while holding alternating vibrating paddles in their hands, in addition to being guided by the therapist. This processing model helps to reduce the intensity of emotion associated with the traumatic memory. It was founded in 1987 to help people who live with PTSD who have not adequately processed specific memories. The experience of EMDR varies for each individual; my experience is extremely visual, filled with conscious and unconscious, primordial imagery. The first piece displayed here represents the beginning of one of my EMDR experiences, showing separate and distinct images that appeared during the initial process. The second piece represents the same images that have been transformed and integrated later in the EMDR experience. Once I’ve had time to process, reflect and create art from these experiences, I like to think about the symbology of the images that appeared to me and ponder what messages they might want me to receive.
